Omega-3 Serving Size Math: Capsules, Days of Supply, EPA + DHA, and Cost
Serving size is the foundation of omega-3 comparison math. Bottle count alone cannot tell you days of supply, EPA/DHA per labeled serving, per-capsule amounts, or cost on a comparable basis.
Start With Capsules per Serving
If a bottle contains 120 softgels and the serving size is two softgels, the bottle contains 60 labeled servings—not 120.
EPA and DHA per Serving
Read EPA and DHA from the Supplement Facts panel on the full labeled serving basis. If a serving contains multiple equal softgels, the listed amounts generally apply to the full serving rather than one capsule.
How to Calculate Per-Capsule Amounts
When a serving contains equal units, divide the per-serving amount by the number of capsules in the serving. For example, 400 mg EPA and 300 mg DHA in a two-softgel serving is approximately 200 mg EPA and 150 mg DHA per softgel.
Days of Supply
Use servings per container together with the labeled directions. Do not assume one serving always equals one day unless the directions actually state that frequency.
Keep Total Oil Separate From EPA + DHA
Total fish oil or algae oil can exceed the combined EPA and DHA amount because the oil contains other fatty acids. Do not substitute total oil weight for EPA + DHA.
Cost per Serving
Divide price by labeled servings to compare cost per serving. If products provide very different EPA/DHA amounts, cost per serving and cost per nutrient amount answer different questions.
Normalize Before Comparing Products
- Use the same serving basis.
- Record EPA per serving.
- Record DHA per serving.
- Keep total oil separate.
- Check servings per container.
- Use the current price if calculating cost.
