Omega-3 labels can show several large milligram numbers that look similar but mean different things. The safest way to compare products is to name each number, confirm the serving basis, and calculate only when the label provides the values you actually need.

Why Total Oil Is Not the Same as EPA + DHA
A source oil contains more than the two fatty acids EPA and DHA. A front label that highlights a large total-oil number should not be read as though the entire amount were EPA and DHA. Use the Supplement Facts panel to identify the specific fatty-acid amounts.
How to Calculate EPA + DHA
If EPA and DHA are both listed for the same full serving, add them:
EPA + DHA = labeled EPA per serving + labeled DHA per serving
Do not mix a per-capsule EPA value with a per-serving DHA value. Normalize the serving first.
How to Calculate EPA + DHA Concentration
When total source oil and EPA and DHA are all disclosed on the same serving basis, one useful label calculation is:
(EPA + DHA) ÷ total source oil × 100
This gives the percentage of the stated source oil represented by EPA plus DHA. It is a ratio, not the total milligrams delivered.
Total Omega-3 Concentration Uses a Different Numerator
If the label separately states total omega-3, another calculation is:
Total omega-3 ÷ total source oil × 100
This can produce a different percentage because total omega-3 may include fatty acids beyond EPA and DHA. Always name the numerator used.
Concentration vs. Dose
Concentration describes a proportion. Dose or amount per serving describes milligrams delivered in the labeled serving. Two products can have similar concentration percentages but different EPA/DHA milligrams because their serving sizes differ.
Capsule Size Is Not Concentration
A large softgel may contain more total oil, but visual capsule size does not tell you the EPA or DHA concentration. Capsule size is mainly a formulation and usability characteristic. Use the label numbers for composition.
What “Concentrated” and “High Potency” Should Make You Check
Terms such as concentrated or high potency are most useful when they lead to measurable label facts. Check EPA per full serving, DHA per full serving, total omega-3 if stated, total source oil if stated, and number of capsules or softgels per serving.
Concentration does not independently prove freshness, contaminant control, source traceability, chemical form, third-party testing, or overall product quality.
